Felton

William "Bill" Chandler, Jr., passed away peacefully on Friday, November 21, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on September 8, 1937, Bill embodied the spirit of dedication, service, and unwavering passion throughout his 88 years.

A proud graduate of Milford High School’s Class of 1955, his school years were marked by his participation in multiple sports, including football, basketball, and baseball, and his talent extended to music as a member of the school band.

Following his graduation, Bill served his country as a member of the Delaware National Guard. His professional life demonstrated a strong work ethic and diverse skill set. He began by working for Charles West Farms in Milford, Delaware. He then embarked on a long and distinguished career at the duPont Nylon Plant in Seaford, Delaware, from which he retired after 27 dedicated years of service. Even after retiring from duPont, Bill continued to work as a trusted crop insurance adjuster. However, his deepest professional identity was rooted in the soil. In 1964, Bill and his beloved wife, Frances, purchased their own farm, fulfilling a lifelong aspiration. Farming was more than an occupation; it was his calling, and he proudly referred to himself simply as "a farmer."

Bill’s other passion was to the fire service, as a life member, he dedicated 70 years. He joined the Carlisle Fire Company in 1955 and transferred to the Felton Community Fire Company in 1965. He held many offices including President and Chief. Bill earned his 50-year service award in 2015 and was honored by being awarded Firefighter of the Year in 2000 and Fireman of the Year in 2003. Bill was a mentor to many and was proud to serve his community.

Bill lived a life full of vitality and genuine connection. He was known for his warm smile, his firm handshake, and his ability to make everyone he met feel valued. He pursued many hobbies with enthusiasm, including hunting, fishing, and golf, and cherished time spent at the beach. An avid sports enthusiast, Bill was a devoted fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and a loyal follower of NASCAR, with the legendary Richard Petty holding the title of his favorite driver. Bill also maintained a strong and guiding faith as a dedicated member of the Felton-Viola United Methodist Church.

He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory. Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Frances Ann Chandler, children; Robin Rockemann and husband Rock, Shelly Wise and husband Todd, and Keith Chandler; granddaughters Jessica Hennessey and husband Ian, Amanda Rockemann and Rochelle Rockemann; great granddaughter Layla Wright; sister Gloria Bridgers and husband Ben; brothers-in-law, George Robbins and husband Ron Bass, John Robbins and wife Diane, and Jerry Robbins; several nephews, great nephews, and great nieces.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Mae Banning Chandler; in-laws, George and Frances Robbins; beloved granddaughter Julia Wise; sister Edna Newhouse and husband Ted; and niece Julie Robbins.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Complete Care at Silver Lake and Delaware Hospice for their care of Bill and support of the family in his final days.
