Obituary

William Leroy Bright, born on June 30, 1950, in Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, at his home in Milford, Delaware. He was a man deeply respected for his gentle, calm, and wise nature, qualities that endeared him to all who knew him. William was cherished for his caring spirit and boundless love, especially toward his family.

For 34 years, William dedicated his professional life to serving the state of Delaware within the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. His commitment to public service was marked by diligence and a genuine passion for preserving the natural world. Beyond his career, he found joy and purpose in serving his community through Habitat for Humanity, reflecting his lifelong devotion to helping others and making a positive impact wherever he could.

William’s personal interests painted a fuller picture of a man who appreciated life’s simple pleasures. A devoted fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, he delighted in cheering for his team with enthusiasm. His love for basketball, gardening, and music brought him much happiness, as did his fondness for exploring yard sales alongside his family; moments treasured and filled with laughter.

At the heart of William’s pride was his family, whom he loved dearly and always put first. He is survived by his children, Lanier Bright, Reneta Austin, Natina Jones and her husband Bryan, and Felicia Gilbert. His siblings, Ursula Waters, Kimberly Dutton, Marilyn Waples, Augustus Waples Jr., Dempriss Jones, and Illya Waples, also carry forward his legacy. William’s enduring influence continues through his grandchildren — Tyaire, Donyell, Tykia and her husband Justin, Lanier Jr., Lejoie, Lannea, Jamie, Jahmar, LeBryan, and Makayla — and eleven great-grandchildren who remain a living testament to his love and care. William also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, who carry his kindness in their hearts. Among his closest companions was his best friend, Nathaniel Frazier, whose bond with William was one of deep respect and enduring friendship. He is also remembered by his first wife, Joyce Bright.

William’s life was shaped by the memory of those who preceded him, including his beloved wife Margarite Bright, and his parents, Queen Elizabeth and Augustus. Though they are no longer with us, their influence and the foundations they laid are reflected in William’s character and the family he nurtured.

A funeral service to remember and honor the life of William Bright will be held at Berry-Short Funeral Home at 119 NW Front Street in Milford, DE 19963 on Thursday April 23, 2026 with a time of visitation from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and the funeral service beginning at 12:00 pm. Interment to follow immediately after the service at Milford Community Cemetery.

In his passing, William Leroy Bright leaves behind a legacy marked by kindness, devotion, and quiet strength. His presence was a source of comfort and wisdom to many. As those who loved him gather to celebrate his life, they remember a man who embodied the very best of humanity through his unwavering dedication to family, community, and the environment. William’s gentle spirit will forever remain a guiding light in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
