Wilburt Thomas Adams, 90, of Georgetown, Delaware, passed away peacefully at his home on July 5 th, 2026.
Born on April 24, 1936, Wilburt was the son of the late Isaac John Adams and Phoebe (Parker) Adams. He was raised in Georgetown, Delaware, where he developed a strong work ethic while working on his family's farm from an early age. He attended Georgetown High School before marrying and making his home in Georgetown. His family's roots in Sussex County can be traced back to 1776.
Throughout his life, Wilburt was known as a hardworking man who never shied away from honest labor. He worked in construction with his uncle, Bill Adams, Case Edwards Co. and later raised chickens for the Schumacher’s before going into business for himself. He valued self-employment and self-determination. No matter the job, he took pride in his work and in providing for his family.
Wilburt found his greatest joy caring for his farm animals and tending his garden. He loved raising chickens, rabbits, goats, guineas, ponies, and ducks, and took great pride in growing his own vegetables. He especially enjoyed attending auctions and farm events. Those who knew him best will remember his incredible work ethic, stubborn determination, and hardheaded nature—qualities that made him uniquely himself and gave family and friends countless stories to share. He loved children, and above all, Wilburt cherished his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth Adams; his daughters, Yvonne Adkins of Lincoln, Marlene Baynard of Bridgeville, Denise Hamilton of Lewes, Joyce Mears of Georgetown, and Linda Richardson of Georgetown; his sisters, Evelyn Parker of Georgetown and Sylvia Turner of Pendleton, South Carolina; and his brother, Martin Adams of Georgetown. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephew’s.
In addition to his parents, Wilburt was preceded in death by his daughter, Christine Adams; his brothers, John “Johnny” Adams, Fred Adams, Clifton “Dee” Adams, and Howard “Tuck” Adams; and his sisters, Virginia “Ginny” Verosko and Connie Jane Adams and his grandson Clifford Elliott.
Family and friends are invited to Wilburt’s graveside service on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 1:00pm at Cokesbury Cemetery Georgetown, DE 19947.
Wilburt will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, his love of the outdoors, his independent spirit, and the lasting memories he created with those fortunate enough to know and love him. His legacy will live on through the family he treasured and the many lives he touched.
