Sandra Ann Lord

Sandra Short Lord, 88, passed away peacefully Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, at her home in Rehoboth Beach. She was born June 5, 1938, at Beebe Hospital and grew up in Georgetown, the daughter of Sally and George Short. She was the youngest of three children, with two older brothers, James and Richard Short, who predeceased her.

Sandra graduated from University of Delaware, where she met her husband of 66 years, William “Bill” Lord. They shared a life filled with family, adventure, travel and love.

Early in their marriage, Sandra taught elementary school in New Jersey while Bill attended Temple University School of Dentistry. After Bill joined the Army, the couple moved to Hawaii, where he served as an Army dentist. They spent four memorable years there, and all three of their children were born in Hawaii. The family later returned to the mainland, where Bill completed his six years of military service at Fort Belvoir, Va. Sandra and Bill eventually returned to Delaware and made their home in Georgetown for 40 years before retiring to Rehoboth Beach. Throughout their marriage, they traveled extensively, visiting many countries and creating treasured memories together.

Sandra’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife and mother, and took enormous pride in her six grandchildren. She cherished every moment spent with them and was happiest surrounded by the people she loved.

Sandra was known for her gentle spirit and extraordinary kindness. She had a special love for children and animals, and had a way of making those around her feel cared for and welcome. She enjoyed reading, golf, playing bridge, painting and traveling. Her curiosity and appreciation for life made her an enthusiastic companion on the many journeys she and Bill shared.

Sandra leaves behind her beloved husband, William Lord; her three children, Leighton Lord of Columbia, S.C., Megan Madigan of Alexandria, Va., and John Lord of Richmond, Va.; and her six grandchildren, Will Lord, Jack Madigan, Owen Lord, Sally Madigan, Isabelle Lord and Alex Lord. She will be deeply missed by her family and by the many people whose lives she touched with her warmth, gentleness and kindness.

A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date.
