Robert Wayne Hicks, a cherished friend and devoted community servant, passed away on October 27, 2025, in Milford, Delaware, at the age of 81. Born on April 14, 1944, in Montgomery, Maryland, Robert's journey through life was marked by his deep dedication to service, both in the military and within his local community.

A proud veteran, Robert served in Vietnam, where he fought valiantly as a navy seal in SEAL Team 1 for the freedoms we hold dear. After his military service, he continued his commitment to service as the department chaplain for the American Legion where he also proudly road his motorcycle as an American Legion Rider. He was invited and fulfilled the call as a member of the 40&8 veterans organization where he dedicated himself to upholding the Constitution and the care and well-being of veterans and their families. He embodied the values of friendship, community, and dedication which were apparent in every aspect of his life.

Robert's educational journey led him to receive his Doctorate of Divinity, solidifying his role as a compassionate spiritual leader. His personality was characterized by an ability to make friends easily; he had a remarkable talent for engaging in conversation, making friends where ever he went.

Having relocated from Gaithersburg, Maryland to Milford, Delaware, Robert became an active member of his new community. He volunteered tirelessly with The American Legion Post #2. Home of the Brave, the VA hospital, Delvets, and at the Delaware Veterans Home. It was here that he particularly loved playing card games with the residents. He was a member of the Military Order of the Cootie, which showed their dedication by helping and supporting hospitalized veterans. His contributions to the VFW added further depth to his commitment to supporting fellow veterans.

Robert was proud of his high school days and often reminisced about the famous individuals who walked the same halls of Montgomery Blair High School with him, such as Sylvester Stallone, Ben Stein, Goldie Hawn, and Connie Chung. This pride reflected his appreciation for both hometown and past.

He is survived by Patricia, the love of his life for 26 years, and many friends who will deeply miss him. Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Miriam Hicks, his son Scott Markle, his brother Gary Hicks, and his beloved dog Cricket.

Robert Wayne Hicks will be remembered for his unwavering spirit, kindness, and the profound impact he had on the lives he touched. His legacy of service and friendship will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of his life at Berry-Short Funeral Homes in Milford, Delaware, on November 3, 2025. Visitation will be held from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, honoring a life lived with purpose and compassion. Internment to follow at Templeville Cemetery in Maryland.
