Neil Anthony Sands passed away on October 13, 2026, at his home in Milton, Delaware, on his 80th birthday. He was born on October 13, 1946, in Nutley, New Jersey.

Neil was the youngest of four siblings and built a life marked by warmth, humor, and generosity. Gregarious and friendly, he truly never knew a stranger. He was a prankster with a mischievous streak, and his sense of humor brought laughter to those around him. At the same time, he was wise and kind, and he would help out anyone in need.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Upsala College in New Jersey and went on to serve his country as a veteran of the United States Army. In his professional life, Neil served as Director of Informational Systems for Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. His work reflected the steady intelligence and commitment that were hallmarks of his life.

Neil also found great joy beyond his career. He was a board member of the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association, and sailing was one of the pleasures that brought him happiness, with his sailboat, Air Bandit, holding a special place in his life. He loved animals and carried that affection naturally as part of his generous spirit. In 2009, he moved to Delaware from New Jersey. While living in New Jersey, he was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pompton Plains.

Above all, Neil will be remembered for the way he made people feel welcomed and valued. His easy manner, playful nature, and readiness to lend a hand left a lasting impression on family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He is survived by his daughter, Bethany Sands; his son, Erik Sands, and Erik’s wife, Kara; his sister, Diana Sands; his brother, Eugene Sands; and his three granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Sands, his beloved wife of 55 years; his father, Frederic Sands; his mother, Marion Sands; and his brother, Fred Sands. May the memory of Neil’s laughter, kindness, and generous heart bring comfort to those who loved him.

Visitation will be held on November 7, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Services - Milton, 416 Federal St, Milton, DE 19968.
