Obituary

Kenneth Hendershot, a charismatic family man, dedicated fireman, US Postal Service worker and landscaper passed away on May 16, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on June 4, 1947, in Somerville, New Jersey, “Kenny’s” life was characterized by his outgoing nature, enormous heart, and his steadfast commitment to serving others.

Kenny grew up in Bernardsville, New Jersey, the son of Charles and Melvina (Beam) Hendershot, who preceded him in death. Later in life, he retired and settled in Delaware, where he lived and gardened for 18 years after moving from Bernardsville. Throughout these years in both states, Kenny stayed true to the virtues of tenacity and kindness, touching the lives of many in his community.

His career spanned over a quarter of a century as a mail carrier and landscaper, roles that suited his neighborly disposition. Beyond his professional duties, Kenny was deeply connected to his community through his volunteer service as a fireman, a commitment he held for an extraordinary 56 years. This unwavering service was among his proudest accomplishments, and his life revolved around the fire company, an affiliation that brought him immense pride and purpose.

Kenny’s heart was as large as the outdoors. Among his hobbies were fishing, hunting, gardening, and a passion for his animals including dogs, chickens, horses, and cats. These passions reflected his appreciation for nature and providing for others. Kenny could be counted on to carry anything heavier than humanly possible, take a joke too far including the unveiling of the true Rudolph, share stories about his strawberries and watermelon hours, and relive his fire department pool party shenanigans. It is in these memories that his family finds joy of his legacy.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Hendershot, and his three children: Mike, Chuck, and Kathy Hendershot. Kenny cherished his nine siblings and was a proud grandfather to fourteen grandchildren. His lineage extends now to two great-grandchildren, one born hours after his passing beautifully illustrating the family ancestry he so treasured.

Kenny Hendershot’s life was marked by his readiness to help anyone in need, his unwavering loyalty to his family and community, and his enduring spirit of service. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, a testament to a life well-lived and a heart well-loved.

A celebration of life service will be held from 5pm-8pm on Wednesday, June 10 at the Bernardsville Fire Department. A private scattering of the ashes will be held with the family in Delaware. Memorial donations may be made in Kenny’s memory to The Bernardsville Fire Company No 1 and First Aid Squad. https://www.bernardsvillefire.org/en/donate
