Julie Ballard Johnstone, born on June 3, 1959, at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Delaware. She was 66 years old.

Julie was a dedicated administrative worker who, after marrying her beloved husband James Johnstone, who was a lawyer, lovingly managed their home and busy social calendar. Her educational achievements include a Bachelor’s degree, and she was known for her passion for reading, boasting over 10,000 books on her e-reader, necessitating the purchase of a new device to house her extensive collection.

An active community member, Julie was involved with the National Democratic Club in Washington D.C., and participated in the Flower Club at St. Alban's Episcopal Church. She contributed her time in the gardens at the National Cathedral in D.C. Together, she and James relocated to Baltimore, where they enjoyed living in the Inner Harbor. Ultimately, she made her home in Spring Meadow, Smyrna, Delaware, where she cherished her involvement with the Juliet Ladies Lunch Club and indulged in playing bonko and bingo.

Julie had a vibrant life filled with hobbies and interests. She adored attending live theatre performances alongside her husband James, and they proudly supported the Mets as VIP fans, often traveling to Florida for spring training. An ardent Washington Redskins fan, she also had a deep affection for her cats, Winston, Pamela, and Justin.

In her youth, Julie and her college friends traveled extensively through Europe and Morocco by train, showcasing her adventurous spirit. She later traveled solo from California to Washington D.C., a testament to her independence and zest for exploration.

She is survived by her mother, Eleanor E. (Wittig) Ballard; her sister, Christine Ballard Gsell and husband Frederick; her brother, Edward L. Ballard and spouse; and her nephew, Garrett Heller, along with other nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Julie was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, James Johnstone, who passed away in 2019; her father, Maurice Edward Ballard; her grandmother, Emily Iselborn; and her brother, Joseph L. Ballard.

Julie Ballard Johnstone will be remembered for her love of literature, her lively spirit, and her dedication to family and community. Her legacy of kindness and passion for life will be cherished by all who knew her.
