Obituary

John R. Porter passed away unexpectedly on September 12, 2026. He was born on June 27, 1950, in Milford, Delaware.

John built a life centered on hard work, family, and the simple pleasures that brought him joy. He worked for 42 years in the logistics industry, a long and steady career that reflected his dedication and strong work ethic. In his younger years, he worked on a farm with his brother moving watermelons and cantaloupes. He also found pleasure in occassionally running equipment for his brother's business Porter Sand and Gravel. He served his nation proudly in the National Guard.

John enjoyed many interests throughout his life. Most of all he loved playing pool, especially at the Moose Lodge, and he was a member of the American Pool Players Association. He enjoyed old cars and attending car shows, and in his younger years he liked playing the guitar and singing. He also found pleasure in bird watching, yard work, and working with his hands, creating things from leftover wood and antiques. Those who knew him will also remember a familiar and distinctive part of him: he always wore a white hat.

Above all else, John was proudest of his family, whom he loved deeply. He is survived by his loving and supportive wife of fifty-two years, Jean Porter; his daughter, Sheila Burrows, and her husband, Daniel; his grandchildren, Dustin Mast and his wife, Ashlyn, Kaitlyn Mast, Dylan Burrows, Lilly Burrows, and Jacob Burrows; his great-grandchild, Henry Mast; and his brother, Marvin Porter. His family was the center of his life, and his love for them was one of his greatest joys.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Porter Sr.; his mother, Kathryn (Behles) Evans; and brother Frank Porter Jr.

A visitation will be held on September 20, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Berry-Short Funeral Homes - Felton, 217 E Main St, Felton, DE 19943. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. To honor and remember John Porter, please feel free to wear a white hat to the services.

John R. Porter will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his Irish good-byes, his love of family, his enjoyment of music, cars, and pool, and the warmth of the life he built over the years. His memory will remain with all who knew and loved him.
