John McBroom

John Paul “Big John” McBroom passed away unexpectedly on September 14, 2025, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Born on January 14, 1988, in Seaford, Delaware, John brought love and laughter into the lives of those around him for 37 years.

A proud graduate of Sussex Central High School’s Class of 2007 in Georgetown, Delaware, John was known for his larger-than-life personality and his deep appreciation for the outdoors. Whether he was hunting in the woods at dawn, running rabbit dogs, casting a line into a quiet pond, or tending to his garden under the sun, John found peace and joy in nature. His love for the outdoors was matched only by his passion for history—he was an avid reader who enjoyed learning about the past and sharing what he discovered with others.

To many who knew him, he was simply “Big John”—a nickname that captured not just his stature but also his big heart and even bigger sense of humor. He had a quick wit and a knack for making people laugh, often lightening any room he entered with a well-timed joke or playful remark. Time spent with family and friends meant everything to him; those moments were where he truly came alive.

John is deeply mourned by his father, Danny R. McBroom (Kitty); his paternal grandmother, Joan G. McBroom; his siblings David & Michelle Mitchell, Jerry & Laura Mitchell, and Dawn Mitchell; as well as extended family members and countless friends who cherished his presence.

He now joins in rest his mother, Phyllis A. Bailey; paternal grandfather, Calvin McBroom; paternal uncle, Roy D. McBroom; and maternal grandmother, Mable Hudson.

John’s sudden passing has left a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him. The family is still coming to terms with this unexpected loss and respectfully asks for privacy during this difficult time.

May the memory of John “Big John” McBroom bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of a life lived with spirit, laughter, and love for the world around him.

A memorial service will be held at Short Funeral Services 609 E. Market St, Georgetown, DE 19947 on September 25th, 2025 at 5pm-7pm.
