Joan S. Gherke, went home to be with the Lord on June 8, 2026 at the age of 93. She was born on April 29, 1933 in Grantsville, WV, the daughter of the late Leah and Otho Sturm.

While living in Ohio she was the owner of Gherke’s Boutique; a woman’s clothing and wig retail store, flower shop and beauty salon. Joan enjoyed giving clothing to missionaries and those in need from her store. Her caring heart continued upon moving to Maryland and Delaware as she often opened her home to visiting speakers from her church. She loved to cook for family and friends and enjoyed vacation trips and attending conferences.

Joan is survived by her loving husband of 73 years, Eugene Gherke of Millsboro and his son, Steve (Judy) Gherke ; sisters Carolyn (Bill) Hatfield, Debbie (Graham ) Living; and granddaughter, Megan (David) Bowlin.

Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Richard “Dick” Sturm.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 18 from 11:30-12:30 and funeral service at 12:30 at Shorts Funeral Home in Georgetown, DE.
