As a self-employed heavy equipment mechanic, James specialized in working on farm equipment, showcasing his skills and commitment to hard work. His professional life was deeply complemented by his proud service in the United States Army, where he served as a Sergeant in the Air Cavalry. His hobbies included collecting and restoring pedal cars and tractors, which was a testament to his love for all things mechanical and nostalgic. He enjoyed attending antique tractor shows, exploring flea markets, and antiquing. As an avid fan of NASCAR, he especially supported the racing career of Bill Elliott. Additionally, he cherished watching the Little League World Series and taking care of his animals.

James is survived by his daughters, Kim Lyons Daugherty (Kyle), Dawn Lyons Dryden, and Jamie Kerns (John); his sister, Bea Wright (Gene); and his brother, Gene Lyons. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Chase Rosenquist, Cayne Rosenquist, Kayla Whitley (Kyle), CJ Baker (Becca), Wyatt Dryden, Alyssa Kerns, and Bryce Kerns, as well as his great-grandchildren, Karson Whitley, Kensleigh Whitley, and Owen Baker.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years, Deborah A. "Debbie" Lyons, whom he cherished deeply. James was also welcomed into eternal rest by his parents, Clifford and Grace (Sapp) Lyons, and his brother, Billy Lyons.
