James K. Cornett, known affectionately as Jim, was born on May 13, 1937, in Portsmouth, Ohio, and passed away on February 10, 2026 at the Milford Hospice Center. Jim's journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and service, and he leaves behind a legacy cherished by his family and friends.

Jim had a career spanning 30 years with Conrail and CSX railroads. He was a remarkable husband and father who prioritized his family above all else.

A proud veteran, Jim served in the Army as a Military Police Officer, fulfilling his duty to his country with honor. 

Active in community and fraternal organizations, Jim was a respected member of the Chebanse Masonic Lodge #429 of St. Anne and served as a Past Master of the previous Chebanse Lodge #429. He also held the title of 32° Scottish Rite Mason and was a member of the Aroma Park American Legion Post 1019 in Illinois. 

Jim had a passion for history and was an avid reader. He cherished the time spent with family and friends.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Bernice Bentley Cornett; his daughter Carolyn Martini (Stephen), his son James "Chris" Cornett (Kay), and his son Stephen Cornett (Susan).  He was a proud grandfather to Sean Martini, Jonathan Cornett (Christine), David Cornett, Zachary Cornett, Kayla Grove (Hayden), Megan Michel, and Emily Martini, and his great-grandchildren Juli, Joaquin, Jackson, Wesley, and Cameron.

He was proceeded in death by his father, Robert Lee Cornett Sr.; his mother, Mabel Marie Hamilton Cornett; his brothers, Robert Lee Cornett Jr. and Lester Cornett; his sisters, Betty Clausing, Rosemary Rawlins, and Delores Hamilton.

Jim's life was characterized by love, dedication, and unwavering support for his family, leaving a profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Jim's caregivers for their wonderful care and support during his final week.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shriner's Hospital or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Jim's name.

A private service will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro, DE.
