Harold "Butch" Wingate, Jr., a lifelong resident of Sussex County, DE, passed away on June 3, 2026, in Seaford, DE. Born on June 8, 1961 to the late Harold and Joyce Wingate, Butch was a man deeply rooted in his community and known for his generous spirit, unwavering commitment to family, and vibrant participation in local pursuits.
Butch devoted his professional career to First State Chevrolet in Georgetown, DE, where he served as a New Car Manager since 2020. His dedication to his work was matched only by his love for his hobbies and community involvement. He loved stock car racing, Butch found joy and excitement in that sport, while also cultivating a passion for gardening alongside his beloved wife, Barbara. He frequently volunteered to help feed the homeless as well, embodying a heartfelt commitment to service.
He was an active member of the American Legion SAL #19, where he cherished social moments with friends, and he proudly supported the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, reflecting his dedication to causes greater than himself.
Preceding him in death were both of his parents; and his stepson, Gregory Bernal.
Butch is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Wingate; his stepchildren, Michael Bernal and Eric Bernal (Casey); and his grandchildren, Isabel and Isaac Bernal, Gabriel Bernal, and Sophia Sheridan. He also leaves behind two aunts, Grace Davis (Robert), and Marlene McGee (Dennis).
Family, friends, and all who knew Butch are invited to pay their respects at a visitation held on June 14, 2026, from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Short Funeral Services, located at 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, DE. A funeral service will begin at 1:00pm at the same location. Interment will immediately follow the services and take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Laurel, DE.
The family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t.org) to honor Butch’s memory and support the vital work of this organization.
Butch’s legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him, reflecting a life well-lived and a heart ever generous. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
