Gerald Ronald Stoeckel, a cherished member of the Georgetown, Delaware community, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026, in his hometown, at the age of 89. Born on August 29, 1936, in Georgetown, Gerald’s life was one defined by devotion to family, steadfast work ethic, and a joyful embrace of life’s simple pleasures.

Gerald’s early years in Georgetown shaped a foundation of values rooted in hard work and togetherness. After completing high school, he began his professional journey at All American. His career then led him to Dover Air Force Base, a significant chapter that reflected his commitment to service. Later, Gerald transferred to George & Lynch, where he devoted himself for 45 years of exemplary work before retiring—a milestone that spoke to the dedication and reliability for which he was so well regarded.

Gerald also served his country as a member of the National Guard, further demonstrating his sense of duty and commitment to others. These experiences were a source of quiet pride for him and offered a solid example to those whose lives he touched.

Upon retirement, Gerald cultivated a life filled with passions that brought him delight. He took great pleasure in tending to his yard, valuing the peace and satisfaction that came from working outdoors. Sundays were reserved for the excitement of NASCAR races, and he found great enjoyment in attending local car shows, where he admired the elegance of classic automobiles—an enthusiasm that many will fondly recall as quintessentially Gerald. He had an affinity for game shows, especially “The Price Is Right,” and treasured moments spent feeding animals and enjoying the loyal companionship of Dusty. Those who knew Gerald will long remember his love of cars, his unwavering commitment to his work, and his appreciation for all that made life meaningful.

Gerald’s legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Sylvia Downes, who stood by his side throughout their life together. He is deeply mourned by his sons Larry Stoeckel, Ronald Stoeckel, and Kevin Stoeckel, along with his daughters-in-law Lisa, Kim, and Kara. Gerald is also survived by his brothers Alan Stoeckel and Paul Stoeckel, his sister-in-law Janet, grandchildren Jason, Justin, Eric and Kami, great-grandchildren Carson, Quinn, Iva Mae, Kit, Biedie, Jack, Hazel, Billy, Joey, Chase and Trent. Numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends join in celebrating his life and mourning his loss.

He was predeceased by his father, Paul Stoeckel, and his mother, Alice Collins, as well as by his sister Jean Chaffin, and his brothers Jack Stoeckel and Wayne Stoeckel. Gerald also endured the profound loss of his son, Ray Stoeckel.

A visitation will be held on July 14, 2026, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Services in Georgetown, located at 609 E Market St, Georgetown, DE 19947. The funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. at the same location.

Gerald Ronald Stoeckel’s life was rich in love, hard work, and moments of quiet joy. Though he will be greatly missed, the memories he leaves behind serve as a lasting testament to a life well lived and deeply valued.
