Eugene “Gene” William Burger, 77, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at Beebe Hospital in Lewes, Delaware, due to congestive heart failure.

Born and raised in York, Pennsylvania, Gene graduated from York Catholic High School in 1965 and attended York College. He proudly served four years in the U.S. Navy—two years active duty and two years in the Navy Reserves—receiving an honorable discharge on April 29, 1969.

Gene dedicated over 40 years to a successful career in Information Technology, serving as a Project Manager for Baltimore Life Insurance, Old Mutual Insurance Company, and later retiring from the BWI Aviation Department in 2019. He was also an active member of the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA) in Timonium, MD, for many years. Gene will be remembered for his strong work ethic and determination.

Outside of work, Gene cherished time with his wife and family. He enjoyed playing golf and basketball and was an avid sports fan. He also made many friends while attending aquatic fitness and swimming classes for over three years at the Sussex Academy Aquatic Center.

He is survived by his loving bride of 55 years, Carolyn E. Burger; two sons, Marc Burger and his wife Melissa of Columbia, MD, and Chad Burger and his wife Nicole of Mt. Airy, MD; and two beloved granddaughters, Alyssa and Avery. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander Blair Burger and Margaret A. (Shuman) Burger. He is also survived by his twin sister, Margaret “Marg” Gotwald (and her late husband David Gotwald III); brother Alex Burger and his wife Linda (Fitz) Berger of York, PA; sister Pat Timmermans and her husband Robert of Mount Wolf, PA; and sister Sue Davis (and her late husband Phil Davis) of Dahlonega, GA.

Family and friends will gather to honor Gene’s life at Short Funeral Home, 416 Federal St., Milton, DE 19968, on January 10, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A celebration of life will follow on April 18, 2026, at his son’s home in Mt. Airy, MD. Further details will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692, in Gene’s memory. Alternatively, consider honoring Gene through the gift of trees via the Arbor Day Foundation.
