Emma J. Gray

Emma J. Gray, a beloved seamstress and certified nursing assistant, passed away at home surrounded by loved on on August 27, 2025, at the age of 82. She was born on April 4, 1943, in Salisbury, MD, to the late Alfred and Ronda Lewis. Emma was known for her strong personality, described as “feared by some, loved by all.”

Emma is survived by her children, Mona Lewis (Benny) and Charles Steininger, and a grandson whom she raised as her own, Michael Steininger. She also leaves behind her siblings, Madeline Toomey and Alice Steininger; along with her grandchildren, Tina, Daniel, and Paula; and several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought joy to her life.

Emma was preceded in death by her daughter, Noel Layfield; granddaughter, Sally Lewis; and siblings, Beulah Lewis, Catherine Adams, and Paul Lewis.

A visitation will be held on September 2, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM, both at Berry-Short Funeral Homes, 119 NW Front St, Milford, DE 19963. She will then be laid to rest at Pittsville Cemetery in Pittsville, MD. Emma’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
