Edwin R. Niblett, a lifelong resident of Milford, Delaware, passed away peacefully at his home on May 17, 2026 at the age of 83. Born on April 28, 1943 to James E. and Edith Marie (Hall) Niblett, “Big Ed," as he was known to those close to him, was a Class of 1961 graduate of Milford High School. Shortly after graduation, Ed enlisted in the Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Sgt 1st Class. In 1964, he married the love of his life, Joan A. Mitchell, and they were together 45 years before her passing.
Ed retired as a Powerhouse mechanic from the DuPont Nylon Plant in Seaford and later delivered parts for Wright's Auto Care.
Ed enjoyed a rich variety of hobbies including bowling, saltwater fishing, gardening, and watching NASCAR. He and Joan loved to travel and were always off on an adventure. They especially loved the many weekend camping trips at Cape Henlopen and Chincoteague with family and friends. You could find him surf fishing at the beach almost every weekend during warm weather. Ed also took pride in creating an elaborate home Christmas display each year.
Ed was an exceptional bowler and participated in the Monday Night Men's League at the Milford Bowling Lanes and in the Seaford DuPont Bowling League. He also enjoyed being part of his community and was a former member of the Milford Lions Club.
Ed was known for his reliability and dedication to his family. He could be found at numerous events supporting and cheering on his children and grandchildren. His dry witty humor, ornery charm, and laid back manner made him a joy to be around, and he was always there for anyone who needed him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Ed was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Joan, and son Craig Niblett.
He is survived by his daughter Christina Oplinger (Will); daughter Cathy Niblett-Sharp (David); sister Linda Wheatley (late husband Kenny); grandchildren Carri Murray (Jake), Cayla Craik (Taylor), Tyler Niblett (Shelby), Caden Oplinger (Alexis), Devyn Sharp, Dawson Sharp; great-grandchildren Isabella and Reyna Murray, Mark Craik, Wren and Lyla Oplinger; brother-in law George Mitchell (Barbara); and caregivers and friends Bobbie Jo Scott and Bubba Perrigan whose support, kindness, and love brought lots of laughter and happiness to Ed in his final years.
