Charles Garfield Glenn III, age 82, passed away peacefully at home on August 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on June 20, 1943, in Wildwood, New Jersey, Charles grew up in Wildwood and graduated from Wildwood High School in 1964. Shortly after he moved to Delaware where he married his wife, Joyce, in 1965. A hardworking man through and through, he retired from a long and faithful career at Southern States in Milford, De. He later worked at MGS and, even after retiring fully, continued to serve by working seasonally at Killens Pond State Park — keeping the grass trimmed and his spirit fulfilled. Simply put, Charles loved to work.
Charles had a deep passion for antique cars and always enjoyed taking his 66 Oldsmobile 442 to a good car show. He loved serving others and had a mischievous streak that brought laughter and joy to those around him. For over 32 years, he was a faithful member of Frederica Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served on the board and helped in countless ways. He was also a lifetime member of the South Bowers Fire Department, proudly volunteering for over 50 years.
Charles is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Joyce (Walls) Glenn; their daughter, Alberta Johnston and her husband Jerry; and two granddaughters, Adrianne Shane (husband Steve) and Brooke Starke (husband Dale). He was the proud great-grandfather of Landon Shane, Adalyn Starke, Aiden Starke, and was joyfully awaiting the arrival of baby Maddox Shane this fall. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marilyn Glenn, and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Garfield Glenn Jr. and Edna Glenn, and his brother, Clifton G. Glenn.
Joyce would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Steve & Adrianne for opening up their home to them 3 years ago and providing loving care to Charles in his final days. Special thanks to Marie Palmer, who began as his home physical therapist and quickly became like family, and to Nurse Colleen for the excellent and compassionate care she provided to both Charles and Joyce during his recent hospital stay.
Charles’s legacy of faith, service, love, and a side of ornery will be dearly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025. A viewing will take place from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 12:00 PM at Berry-Short Funeral Home.
