MILTON—Bayard W. Hendricks, 78, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at Christiana Hospital, Christina, DE.
Bayard was born on September 12, 1944, son of the late Bayard W. and Edith (Binder) Hendricks of Philadelphia, PA.
Bayard was a Rehoboth “Seahawk” who participated on the baseball, football, and track teams and sang with “Burr and the Briars.” He graduated from Rehoboth High School in 1963 and then went on to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Delaware and a master’s degree in educational administration from Delaware State University. Mr. Hendricks became a beloved English teacher at both Sussex Central High School and Rehoboth Jr. High School. He also served as an administrator at Woodbridge High School and Shields Elementary School.
Bayard was a devoted member of the Christian Science Society and lived life to the fullest. He was one of the original local surfers and continued to surf and bodyboard well into his sixties. You may have recently caught a glimpse of him skateboarding in Rehoboth, walking on the trails in Lewes, or cycling through Milton. He also enjoyed running, sailing, and weightlifting, as well as hunting and fishing with his son-in-laws and grandchildren. Most of all Bayard loved spending time with his family.
Bayard is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth (Seasholtz) Hendricks; daughters, Rebecca Lockwood (Darin), Jessica Hague (Mike); three grandchildren, Alexander Lockwood, Andrew Lockwood, and B.J. Hague; and his sister, Marjory Lloyd.
