Anthony Martin
Smith
July 24, 1951 – April 15, 2026
Berry Short Funeral Home
11:00 am - 1:00 pm (Eastern time)
Anthony "Tony" Martin Smith peacefully passed on Wednesday, April 15th at 10:14 PM. Son of Noah and Virginia Smith, Tony was born in Lewes, DE and spent his life as a fixture of Sussex County, Delaware. Tony excelled in high school as a wrestler and baseball player. He was drafted and served in Vietnam as a sharpshooter for the Army National Guard. In his adult years, Tony was a national champion player/manager in Adult Modified-Pitch Softball and could be found on a ball field or a campsite for most of his adult life.
The majority of Tony's career was spent executing large scale construction projects for A.P. Croll and Sons, and Clean Cut Pavers and Pools. He was proud of his work on streetscapes from Lewes to Seaford. His coworkers looked to him as a teacher and a friend; always ready to share a lesson, a beer, and a story. He enjoyed his 'retirement' as a work camper and kept his hard working spirit until the very end.
Father to Jenny, Steve, Amanda, and Catherine. Tony was in his glory as a Pop-Pop to his 7 grandchildren. Camping with Pop-Pop became a staple of his grandkids' summers and he could be seen smiling as he grilled for his family and watched as they played around him. His wallet and house were filled with pictures of his kids and grandkids.
Tony leaves behind both family and friends, fond memories, and unforgettable stories. A Memorial Service will be held at Berry-Short Funeral Home at 119 NW Front Street, Milford, Delaware on Saturday, May 2nd from 11:00am-1:00pm. Followed by a Celebration of Life at Jellystone Camp-Resort in Lincoln, DE from 2:00-5:00pm.
